Still, excusing this as an "artistic choice" is delusional and frankly insulting to the artists behind the game. The technical presentation has bigger problems than DP1 ever had on Xbox, but the reloading fix made it less of an issue for me. Hearing the same story four times in a row during one ride might be "so bad it's good" for some players, but I'm not on board (I literally started to step off the skateboard to make York shut up at some points). Same with the frequently repeating voice lines while skateboarding, they either should have recorded more unique lines or just reduced their frequency. I don't remember the first game being this repetitive and just because York makes fourth wall breaking jokes about the amount of fetch quests doesn't mean they suddenly become fun. Same can't be said for the quest design, both main and side missions. The shooting section in the Otherworld were surprisingly competent, I enjoyed them more than the action segments in DP1. I hope the rewrite will allow him to express what he really wanted to convey. It's clear from the rest of the story and his previous work that Swery had good intentions. I'm glad that the script will be rewritten in the sections that disappointed people. The soundtrack and voice acting were other real highlights. My stand-outs were the CLG Patti and her dad Melvin. The new additions to the cast are memorable and fit right in with the rest of the DP universe. I loved the humor, especially the cheerful optimism of York no matter the situation still one of the best characters in gaming. The True Detective approach to storytelling is effectively used to keep you interested throughout and the ending is a satisfying conclusion to both games.ĭP2 is dripping with style, from the title cards to the Jazz breaks between chapters. Overall, I didn't think it was quite as good or unique as the original, but the story delivers.
